Sometimes it is by choice or others times its beyond our control like being laid-off. Regardless, starting a new career is an exciting opportunity especially in this technological age. There are a variety of resources to get you started in your new career; here are several ways to get prepared for a new career: Use your Experience Your past experience will help you do well at your new career. For example, if you have been a customer service rep for many years those skills can easily be utilized in a role of an outside sales professional. Relate what you have learned to what you are going to do and the adjustment wont be tough. Research and Read Compile resources on your new career: websites, industry sites, books, marketing material; those are a few things you can use to build your knowledge and grow. As you progress further continue to read more and stay up-to-date on your industry. Learn on the Job You can learn from doing and observing! How to Remove Random People from Your LinkedIn Company Page Does your company suffer from LinkedIn “Randoms”? As a recruiter, you’ll know that the lovely staff number you see at the top of the company page on LinkedIn is not a true reflection of who actually works there. You’ll go to that space and attempt to source from it. You use it to help you head hunt talent and find new clients.  If you’re a recruitment leader you’ll use it to source talent for your own businesses. If you’re a recruitment marketer or recruitment leader you’ll get pretty fed up of the fact that you can’t control who appears on your company page. You can’t stop anyone from adding themselves and you can’t nip into a leavers’ profile and redact your company. We all know that someone’s LinkedIn company profile is theirs and not even LinkedIn have the right to edit it. So who is on your company page right now? I many cases the people attached to a LinkedIn company page are NOT a true reflection of its employees. This is not unique and it’s not LinkedIn’s fault. This is endemic across all social media platforms, and a reflection on the digital space we now operate in. It also demonstrates the lack of control brands have over their employer brands. (Another blog for another day…) Your LinkedIn company page (and other social media streams) will be made up of the following “employees”: People who work for the company (yay!) People who used to work for the company (oops) People who’d love to work for the company (ok.. a little weird) People who work as contractors / supply teachers / temps for your business (candidate lists for other recruiters #’stupid!) People who work for a company with (almost) the same name and are really silly and not spotted that they have selected the wrong business (… read my mind) No rhyme or reason why the hell are they on the company page at all? Points 2-5 are “randoms” and point 5 are “super-randoms” â€" but what they all have in common is the fact that they don’t work there, they have no right to be shown there, but the tech, and the terms and conditions of LinkedIn state that they can be there… Removing randoms from your company LinkedIn page: There is hope! You can actually get these people removed. It takes a little time and effort, but it’s worth it. I get that this depends upon the size of your business. If you employ thousands of people across the globe, keeping track of your company employees on LinkedIn is a big ask. I’d at least suggest you have a more robust starters and leavers process â€" and ensure that someone (anyone!) has responsibility for this task. I often go into businesses (either staffing companies or business with in-house recruitment teams) who have no idea who this job would sit with, and the page is out of control. If you come across someone who doesn’t work in your business, you can begin the “removal of randoms” process by clicking this link and filling out the form. I’ve done it â€" a lovely guy from the Ukraine decided to come and work for me (pro-bono) and do a job that I hadn’t even though I needed in a country I have yet to market into… bless him! He has since “left”… Have a process for your LinkedIn company page: There’s nothing stopping you from having a monthly process for checking your company page and looking for those randoms. Be sure to spend a little time on this. Random staff can make your business look random. They can make your business look bloated with fakers, have sector specialisms which are not appropriate, and overall have a negative impact on your ability to be taken seriously and trade. Insubordination Definition, Resolutions - Algrim.co Insubordination is the act of directly or indirectly refusing to perform a duty, task, legal action, ethical action or process that has been given as clear directive from a manager, superior or leader. A common misconception is that insubordination is when an employee verbally insults, disrespects, or shows “pushback” toward a manager or superior. That is considered insolence, which is not the same as insubordination. Misconduct is another form of misbehavior that is confused with insubordination. Misconduct is when an employee is acting with criminal, harassing, or unethical behavior. All three of these types of issues are normally covered within a business code of conduct, handbook, or other human resource guidelines. Insubordination Definition Insubordination is the act of willfully disobeying an order of one’s superior. Refusing to perform an action that is unethical or illegal is not insubordination; neither is refusing to perform an action that is not within the scope of authority of the person issuing the order. What Is Considered Insubordination in the Workplace? When a request is made on behalf of a superior, in order for it to be considered insubordination, the original request must be one that is of legal, ethical or reasonable nature. If that is the case and the employee refuses to obey that request, through verbal or physical actions. Then the employee would be portraying insubordination. If the employee passively refuses the request, such as openly ignoring the request, then the employee would still be portraying insubordination in the workplace. Can You Be Fired for Insubordination? Insubordination may be efficient enough evidence to provide immediate dismissal of the employee (or to be terminated or “fired”). Companies have employee handbooks, codes of conduct, and other disciplinary guides that are provided to each new hire during their training process. These are the assets that should be referenced when determining how insubordination is handled in the work environment. What If The Request Was Made by Someone Without Authority? If an employee received a request by another employee, who is not their superior, and the request was dismissed, it is not considered insubordination. As long as the original request was not deemed unethical or illegal and it is not on behalf of a peer (a colleague or someone who lacks the authority of that employee), then denying the request is not considered insubordination. What Is Not Considered Insubordination? In the U.S., many work cultures embrace conflict. The types of conflict they hope to embrace are those that present innovation and progress. If you, the employee, were to receive a request from your superior, then disagree with that request and communicate your disagreement; that would be not be considered insubordination. If your superior, in that same work scenario, were to dismiss your disagreement and ask for you to complete the directed work, with you denying it; that would be considered insubordination. What Type of Dismissal is Insubordination Considered? When dismissal happens due to insubordination, it would be considered termination for poor performance. This type of termination is not considered wrongful termination. And performance may be justified or spoken to in the employment agreement signed on behalf of the employee during their acceptance of an employment offer. Proving an Employee Has Been Insubordinate The process for proving that an employee has been insubordinate would be the following: 1. Document the original request made by you, the superior. 2. Document the nature of which the employee refused your request. 3. Document any time or losses the business suffered through the insubordinate nature. 4. Write a formal insubordination letter communicating the conflict with terse simplicity and factual evidence. 5. File any formal paperwork your Human Resources department may have for employee conflicts. 6. Meet with your superior to discuss the insubordination, ensure that it has been documented by Human Resources, and develop a plan to move forward (conflict resolution). Insubordination Resolution All insubordination should be properly documented and submitted to your Human Resources team before attempting to resolve a conflict. The steps to resolve insubordination are: 1. Schedule a meeting with the superior and employee. 2. Replay the insubordinate action in a retrospective manner. 3. Discuss what can be done to prevent insubordination in the future. 4. Discuss steps that can be taken for both the superior and the employee to improve collaboration. Insubordination Letter Example An insubordination letter is a letter of termination that is provided to an employee on behalf of a Human Resources team. These letters indicate the dismissal of the employee as well as an outline of the performance issues which caused the dismissal. This means that the user could potentially click buttons on the interface, load new data into their view, yet never navigate to a new URL. When the user refreshes their browser, they will lose the view they had previous to clicking buttons and loading in new data. There are solutions to this problem which provide routing through Javascript. Many Javascript frameworks like Angular have a routing solution built in, and most others like React have a favored-framework to handle routing in an AJAX powered application (in the case of React, react-router). 5. What is an HTTP request vs an AJAX request? An AJAX request is an HTTP request, usually made between a Javascript user-interface application and a server-side application. 6. AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript and XML. In its name, what does Asynchronous mean? What is the difference between an asynchronous and a synchronous process? An AJAX request is asynchronous, meaning that the time the result will return for the request is indeterminate. You can’t guarantee when an AJAX response will come, or if it will at all; an AJAX request could fail! Other processes and code can run while the result of the request is being awaited. If several AJAX requests are initiated at the same time, for example perhaps two separate AJAX requests load in a user’s personal data and a list of a user’s friends, the result of those two requests can be displayed in whichever order they return. Loading indicators can be rendered on the screen, and the user can still use the application while the AJAX requests are pending. Unlike an asynchronous process like an AJAX request, in a synchronous process, the return time is known and other code or processes in the same thread do not happen “in between” the invocation of the synchronous process and the following lines of code. If you invoke a synchronous, computationally-complex piece of code that takes a long time to run, maybe 10 seconds for example, then to your users your Javascript application might look “frozen” for 10 seconds until the synchronous code is finished executing. 7. Depending on the method by which you make AJAX requests, for example using ES6 fetch() vs jQuery $.ajax(), your code would rely on either promises or callbacks, respectively. Describe what a callback function would be used for in the context of an AJAX request. The callback function would contain the logic for whatever happens after the AJAX request has returned. Content-driven websites which rely on search rankings in Google or other search engines must be careful in their usage of AJAX. While AJAX is a straightforward way to build more dynamic-feeling and interactive user interfaces, improper usage can cause a content-dependent site to be virtually unfindable on the internet! The reason this can happen, is because when Google builds its indexes of searchable websites, it uses computer algorithms to “crawl” the web, landing on webpages, and digesting the content that is on the webpage. When a site uses AJAX to load in its content, Google’s crawling algorithm will land on a page, and see no content. The content might be on its way, but the crawler does not know that it should wait for an AJAX request to complete, so this page looks completely blank! Fortunately, there are some solutions that allow a website to combine the interactivity of an AJAX-driven user interface and the searchability of its content. These solutions are called server-side rendered frontend frameworks, React Next is one such example. 11. Assume you are working with a legacy Javascript jQuery application which uses the $.ajax() function to make all of its AJAX requests to the backend application. There are currently more than 100 invocations of $.ajax() in the application. A new requirement is made, which says that all HTTP requests to the backend application must include a header, which says “authApp”: “yes-pls”. How would you approach this requirement, so that the Javascript application continues to work? In order for this Javascript application to continue working, all of the existing 100 $.ajax() calls must include the new header. Assume you are making an AJAX request from a Javascript user-interface to a server-side application, and the request fails. Upon inspecting the request, you see that the failed request’s HTTP method was OPTIONS, even though you expected to send a GET request. What could cause your AJAX request to fail like in this circumstance, and why was OPTIONS the HTTP method for the request and not GET? An AJAX request could fail like it did in this circumstance, if the hostname of the website which created the AJAX request is different than the hostname of the API to which the request was sent. For example, if my Javascript application is accessed at http://www.myapp.com, and my server-side application is hosted at http://www.myapi.com, I could see this error. This is due to a security feature in modern browsers called Cross Origin Resource Sharing restriction. When a web browser sees that you are trying to make an AJAX request between two different URLs (for example, a GET request), the browser first sends what is called a “preflight” OPTIONS request. This request will ask the server being contacted if it has explicitly allowed the sending server to make the GET request. If the webserver was not specificall configured to allow GET requests from the sending hostname, then the OPTIONS request will fail and the GET request will not occur. 13. In many cases, AJAX requests are made to an API that exists at some web address; however, what if you wanted to load a static file with AJAX. Would this be possible? It is possible to load in data from a static file. Instead of using an API’s URL for the URL property of your AJAX request, simply point directly to the static file’s address. This could be a JSON file for example. 14. Bob is a web developer working on an interface that shows a list of users and their associated data like their name, phone number, and address. Bob makes an AJAX call to retrieve the list of users, but he notices that the data he receives does not have the address field that is required. He decides that, since there are only 4 users in the list, he will make a separate AJAX request for each user, to an endpoint where he can retrieve the address as needed. Is Bob’s approach to solving this problem OK? If not, why? Bob did not make the best solution to the problem. The issue is that Bob relies on the assumption that there are only 4 users in the system. If the system grows, to say 200 users, loading Bob’s list will require 200 AJAX requests to be made to the backend. Just to retrieve address information! The proper approach is for Bob to communicate his need for address information to his colleagues who wrote the backend application, or communicate with the product team to see if the feature can be excluded until a better solution can be implemented. 15. Imagine a user is accessing your website on a public library computer, where due to security concerns Javascript has been disabled in the web browser. If your website uses AJAX to load content onto its pages, Is it possible for that user to view your webpage and its content? Why or why not? The user will not be able to view your web page’s content. Because AJAX depends on Javascript code to be executed by your browser, the library’s Javascript restriction will prevent those AJAX requests from firing. Unless you have a Javascript-disabled-friendly version of your site accessible, this user will not be able to see your content unless they go to a different machine.
